VideoTIM5 shows a handwritten „24“ while the video camera is positioned on a piece of paper

The VideoTIM device has been available at various blind workplaces at home and abroad for more than fifteen years. VideoTIM devices offer new career opportunities for blind people. The VideoTIM is also a successfully used assistive device in the private sector, helping completely blind people to achieve extensive autonomy in many writing and sign-based areas of life. The latest generation of devices, VideoTIM5, has completely new electronics and expanded software functions. The brightness adjustment now happens automatically.

The VideoTIM technology consists of two main components: a hand-held video camera and the base device with a tactile monitor. The VideoTIM device works like this: The image recorded by the hand-held video camera is transferred to the touch display and displayed there with tactile dots. This process was developed by us and is called the tactile projection system, TPS.

When we talk about a reading device for the blind, we mean a unique device that allows the user to independently see “tactilely”. The device is not comparable to the automatic reading devices (scanners with OCR and voice output), which are sometimes also referred to as reading devices for the blind.

VideoTIM5 shows „Sy“, the video camera is on the system settings of a tablet computer

The VideoTIM reading device for the blind makes documents readable with the fingers. After a day of training, most users can read entire sentences autonomously. On the second day of training, this reading becomes much faster. After several days, reading with the TPS technique becomes routine. The reading hand lies still on the touch monitor and records all the information on the underside of the fingers.

Many VideoTIM users were previously OPTACON users. The VideoTIM device runs much more smoothly compared to the functionally similar OPTACON and offers a comfortable tactile image without the signs of fatigue or burn-in effects that occur with the OPTACON. To our knowledge, the OPTACON has not been manufactured for over twenty years.
